Accessibility for all is improving nationwide. Many of the UK’s 69 cities are working hard to ensure ramps, lifts and stair-free access are widely available. Removing obstacles to make cities wheelchair friendly mean you can enjoy more of this great country.

With spring on the horizon, there has never been a better time to plan an adventure on your mobility scooter. As a nationwide company, Easy Pay Mobility has staff all over the UK who know the most accessible destinations. We’ve rounded up our top five locations to help you on your way.

Accessible UK destinations

London

With a population of over 9million people, London’s diverse population calls for a fully inclusive approach to accessibility. So whilst it may be busy, London is surprisingly well equipped to welcome you and your mobility scooter all year round.

All variations of public transport in London are required to meet certain accessibility requirements. Services offer ramps, lifts and onboard space for mobility aids.

It is vital to check that your model’s specifications meet TFL requirements before you travel. This will allow you to have a smooth, stress-free journey. TFL have a thorough guide on their website and within an app to help you plan an accessible journey.

The UK’s capital city is jam-packed with world famous tourist destinations. From Buckingham Palace to the Tower of London, the science museum to the Tate modern. Wherever you go, culture is on every corner.

A growing majority of tourist hot spots are well equipped for mobility scooter users. Many museums offer wheelchair and scooter hire, alongside lifts and ramps. London’s famous parks tend to have flat, smooth pathways for an easy ride.

It's always best to call ahead to your desired attraction to check what support they can offer you during your visit.

Belfast

Northern Ireland’s exciting capital city is fast becoming a must-visit UK destination. Enjoy history and culture with your scooter in tow, thanks to many adapted amenities.

Arguably one of the world’s most famous ships, the Titanic, was built in Belfast’s docks. Visit the wheelchair friendly Titanic Quarter and adjoining museum to learn about its history.

Cathedral Quarter is a lively hub full of restaurants and bars. Fantastic shopping, live music and street art add to the vibrant atmosphere. Pavements are accommodating to moblity aids, making it easy to navigate Belfast’s cosmopolitan heart.

Just outside of the city is the Giant’s Causeway, a must-see landmark. An accessible bus and DDA approved route allow you to experience this ancient wonder in all its glory. Even better, this world heritage site is free to visit!

Chester

Dive deep into history along Chester’s ‘Rows’ and city walls. This city won the European Access City award in 2017 so is well equipped to welcome guests with all types of mobility needs.

Chester’s famous city walls are the the longest, oldest and most intact that remain in the UK. These 2000-year-old walls are surrounded by smooth, sloping paths. This makes the historic route a mobility scooter owner's dream.

The mediaeval, black and white ‘Rows’ are home to an eclectic mix of shops, bars and restaurants. Ramps and level access allow mobility scooters to explore this fantastic feature of Chester. Users of mobility aids can download a detailed map of the city’s accessible areas from Visit Chester.

Chester zoo is a fun day out for all the family and is a fully accessible attraction. Mobility scooter users are accommodated with accessible pathways, lifts and ramps. Don’t miss out on any action – multiple viewing points allow scooter uses to observe the zoo’s incredible wildlife.

Glasgow

As Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow is a fantastic place to visit. Even better, it’s considered one of the UK’s most accessible destinations.

Museums and galleries are abundant in Glasgow and cater very well for mobility scooter users. We recommend exploring Glasgow in an alternative way, via its accessible mural trail. This colourful route is decorated with amazing street art that celebrates the city’s creative talent.

If shopping’s your thing, Glasgow’s the place to be. Mobility scooters have no issues gliding down the flat, smooth pavements in the St Enoch Centre or Argyll Arcade.

Immerse yourself in Glasgow’s thriving food culture from the comfort of your mobility scooter. Multiple restaurants and bars are adapted for easy accessibility and ready to welcome you in.

Experience a touch of tropicana in bonny Scotland at Glasgow’s Botanic Gardens. Weird and wonderful plants from all over the world can be discovered in the many glasshouses and displays. Gentle slopes, ramps and wide paths make this attraction very accessible for mobility scooter users.

Cardiff

Old and new collide in this exciting metropolis in the south-east of Wales. Cardiff is a compact city, easy to navigate with plenty of accessible attractions.

You can’t miss Cardiff castle, a site of international significance located in the city centre. The castle is steeped in medieval history and has level access for mobility scooter access.

As the city centre is flat and pedestrianised, getting around Cardiff is easy for mobility scooter users. Even better, there’s a very accessible public transport network to help you experience more of the city during your visit.

The Bay area is home to Cardiff’s Millennium Centre which is home to the Welsh National Orchestra and Welsh Opera. Whilst your there, take a trip around the bay on Cardiff Harbour Tours’ Aquabus. This wheelchair friendly vessel is a great way to experience the city’s stunning scenery.
